Today we are going to go a lot more mainstream and look at “Uno Junior” more specifically the most recent printing that comes in an oddly slightly not square box that probably saved Mattel about half a gram of card. Played with Henry(2) and Toby(5)
Henry is now two and a half and is starting to get to roughly the same age in which we started to properly introduce Toby to games and we are doing it in much the same way where Henry plays the game but mummy acts as a ringer and helped talk him through his terms and helps guide him with what to do.
I am working on the assumption that you know how to play Uno and while Uno has its place there are in my opinion a lot better hand-shredding games such as “LAMA”, “Yura Yura Penguin” and “Munchkin Mighty Monsters”. (links to those games below)
We got given “Uno Junior” for Christmas and I was immediately interested to see how it differed from the already pretty simple main game. the answer to that question is that it doesn’t, this is essentially a pretty standard deck of Uno cards with the option of taking out some of the special effect cards in order to make the game simpler but you could do this with a standard deck of Uno cards.
One thing worth noting though is that each number is represented by a different animal so if you are playing with a child who doesn’t quite yet have a grasp of numbers they can match the animal or the color and ignore the numbers. this did help quite a lot but to be honest most of the themed Uno decks have this same feature.
Henry had a real blast as you can see in the photographs and really enjoyed playing this and I am sure that we will play this a lot more in the future but short of the colourful and friendly characters there is no real reason to buy this over a standard Uno deck.
