Game #5 of our “UKGE ROUNDUP 2024” is “Go for Gold,” which we played at the “Gibsons Games” stand.
“Go for Gold” is a relatively simple card game that is better described as “Dobble with a bit more thinking and a better scoring system.”
Essentially, the way the game works is that a line of six cards is placed on the table. You then have to grab the cards from the table that match the Competition Card displayed at the top of the deck, either matching the number of events or the type of event (colour).
After a predetermined number of rounds, the game is over, and scoring begins on all of the cards you collected.
In each event category (different colour), the person with the most different events in that category gets the gold, then silver, etc. These are then added up, and a winner is declared.
It’s a relatively simple game, but I actually think this is a much better game than Dobble. It’s about time that we got some “games like Dobble but better than Dobble” to go alongside all of the “games like Uno that are better than Uno” games that exist out there.

The reason for this is that it is not purely about speed and observation. There is definitely some strategy involved, particularly in situations where there are multiple cards on the table. Bearing in mind you can only grab one at a time and you have to use one hand, there will potentially be a card on the table that doesn’t actually score you any points versus a card that does. Therefore, quickly working out which the best card to take, knowing that the other one is likely going to be taken by an opponent, adds an element of strategy that I really enjoyed.
The components are nice, with the little cardboard medals being a nice touch, and it’s pretty good value. It is officially licensed by Team GB and was obviously released to tie in with the Summer Olympics.
My only gripe is that it comes in a relatively large box that most definitely could have been smaller.
Overall, it’s a nice, fun little game that you will have a decent idea if this is going to appeal to your family. It could be especially good as a gateway game for Olympic lovers or even potentially older relatives.
It will be available soon on the Gibsons Games Website and I assume at wider retail very shortly: https://gibsonsgames.co.uk/products/team-gb-go-for-gold
