The Muddles

Note: This is a short really early legacy review before I started posting longer form review in our Facebook Group.

Game 40 of the “Bailey family sorta Summer Board Game Bonanza” is “The Muddles” a simple but delightful card game played by myself Jack(7) and Toby(4).

Essentially you put a selection of “Muddles”(animals that are a mic of 2 other animals) in the middle of the table and then you take 3 animal cards. What you are looking to do is trade 2 animals in to take a muddle. The rarer the muddle the more points it’s worth.

eg

Frog and Pig = Pog

Bee and Worm = Wee

On your turn, you can also trade out cards and take new cards. If the animal you want is missing you can always take it from another player.

First to 5 wins

Whilst that’s it and I wouldn’t say this was a sure-fire hit we did enjoy it and would definitely play again with grandparents. I think this is an excellent game to introduce kids to card games but maybe not meaty enough for kids that are already pretty comfortable with these sorts of mechanics.

One issue I have that Cristina Mills reminded me of is that it doesn’t state how you fill your hand after playing 2 cards. We let you pick up immediately but end your turn but it’s a bit annoying to miss such a simple thing in such a simple game in the rulebook.

They did wanna play twice though which is always a good sign.

The game also comes with a delightful picture storybook that definitely could do with a full-size release that I enjoyed reading to the kids and doing the usual “Bailey trademark silly voices”.

Top 3 children’s books that I enjoy doing a silly (and not intentionally offensive) voice to…

1) Oi Frog

Frog (In a Deep South Preacher accent)

Cat (In a posh British accent)

Dog (always sounding like he’s eating while talking)

2) Kitchen Disco – The whole book read like a cross between a Wedding DJ and “Cat” from Red Dwarf.

3) Bad Banana – the whole book read really quickly in an Ali G style accent.

… Oh yeah… I digress… the muddles… lovely little card game… great for younger kids… lovely artwork… a good book as a little bonus…
