A very quick preview post of an upcoming game I got a chance to play an extremely early prototype of last night and that is “Spooktacular” by Level 99 Games.
Essentially you play as one of the monsters from films in a movie theatre that have come to life and the objective is to scare as many people as possible to earn points.
The artwork is gorgeous and are often based on classic movie properties from the likes of Stephen King, Modern Horror and Universal Monsters.

The gameplay is really simple and involves using a small deck of card to do things such as scare meeples to get them to run through doors into the next room, devouring meeples of each colour and moving your opponent around to gain points.
What makes it special though are the other abilities attached to each individual monster of which there are 20 (which is super impressive as normally in games like this you get 10 and the rest are expansions.
I played “Killer Car” which lets you pick up passengers and gain extra abilities and my opponent played the “Hell Chef” which lets you create dishes in rooms to manipulate what’s in them. I also saw another character who I didn’t play as but had tokens that manipulated the score track which is one of the coolest things I have ever seen in a game (with a score track)
Everything is “Goosebumps” level horror so definitely suitable for older kids and I was super impressed and I can’t wait to do a proper review of it (and actually show you stuff) when it gets released on Kickstarter in Augustish as this could definitely be one of my favourite games of next year
